The BENS Hook Formula: 4 Psychology-Backed Triggers For Scroll-Stopping Reels

Hook Templates, Instagram Reel Hooks

They don’t call me the hook fairy for nothing! 🧚🏻‍♀️ I’ve been studying social media for over a decade, and I can tell you that the difference between a hook that gets ignored and a hook that goes viral usually comes down to one thing.

It is tapping into how human brains actually work.

We’re wired to pay attention to certain types of information. When you understand the four core triggers that make us stop, your hooks stop feeling like guesswork and start feeling like science.

To make this easy to understand and implement, I’ve created the BENS Instagram Hook Formula: Big, Easy, New, Safe.

Start using these triggers in your hook, and you will see an increase in Instagram engagement! Layer two or three of them together and you have a hook that gets your ideal client to stop, watch, and follow.

Let’s break it down.

What Is the BENS Reels Hook Formula?

BENS is an acronym for the four psychological triggers that consistently stop the scroll on Instagram:

  • B = Big — surprising, dramatic, or status-shifting information
  • E = Easy — anything that makes life simpler or saves effort
  • N = New — fresh, just-launched, or recently uncovered information
  • S = Safe — research-backed, trusted, or risk-reducing information

The reason this formula works is that each trigger speaks to a deep, hardwired part of how we process content. Our brains are constantly scanning for things that promise growth, ease, novelty, or protection. When your hook activates one of those, you have a much higher chance of someone stopping to watch.

The best part? You can apply this to literally any niche. A plumber, a coach, a candle maker, a financial advisor, a wedding planner. The formula does not change.

B is for Big

We’re not talking about clickbait, but a topic/solution/etc that’s meaningful. A hook that uses the “Big” trigger taps into status, transformation, or a shift in how someone sees the world.

Because we’re attracted to things that feel important or could change our lives in a real way.

Here are a couple of examples:

  • This one decision changed the entire trajectory of my business in 90 days.
  • The single biggest reason your engagement is dropping has nothing to do with the algorithm.

The trick with “Big” is to deliver on the promise inside the content. Hint at something significant and then include the tip or payoff.

E is for Easy

We are all running on fumes. We’re juggling work, kids, businesses, relationships, our own mental health, and a constant stream of decisions. When you offer something that makes life easier, you are speaking directly to a need everyone has.

Easy hooks promise less effort, less time, less stress, or less guesswork. It makes whatever the goal is feel doable.

Examples:

  • The dinner I have been making weekly that only takes 15 minutes from start to finish.
  • The Canva template I use to create a week of content in under 30 minutes.
  • How to write your next Instagram caption in 5 minutes without overthinking it.

The word “without” is especially powerful here. Without spending hours. Without a fancy setup. Without overthinking. It signals to the brain that the heavy lift is removed, which makes the offer almost impossible to scroll past.

N is for New

We’re wired to pay attention to anything new, and we hate feeling FOMO.

The word “new” alone often does most of the work, but you can also use phrases like “just dropped,” “brand new,” “recently released,” or “just discovered.”

Examples of what this looks like:

  • Raleigh just got two brand new nonstop international flights and I am obsessed.
  • The new Trader Joe’s snacks that came out this month and are already selling out.
  • Harvard just released a study that confirms what we have all been thinking about productivity.

Newness pairs beautifully with reaction content too. Green screening an article or breaking down a just-released study will get your ideal clients to pay attention.

S is for Safe

This one is the most underrated of the four. Safe means anything that reduces risk, builds trust, or makes the audience feel like they can let their guard down with what you are saying.

We’re skeptical by nature. We’ve been burned by bad advice, gimmicky products, and creators who do not know what they are talking about.

So when a hook signals safety through credentials, research, expert experience, or proven results, our brain relaxes, and it grabs our attention.

Let’s see what this looks like:

  • The drugstore skincare that actually works. From a dermatologist with 15 years in practice
  • The one habit that saved me thousands of hours, backed by 12 years of running my own business
  • 3 things every first-time homebuyer should never skip, from a lender who has closed over 500 deals.

You can layer this with your own identity, your credentials, the research you are citing, or the trusted brands you are referencing. Anything that signals “you can trust this” is doing the work of the Safe trigger.

How to Layer the BENS Hook Triggers for Maximum Impact in Your Instagram Reels Content

You don’t need all four in every hook. But the more you can stack, the stronger the hook becomes. Here are some examples of layered hooks.

Big + Easy: The 15-minute habit that completely changed how I run my business.

New + Safe: A brand new study from Harvard just confirmed what every burnt out mom already knew.

Easy + New + Safe: The new 20-minute strength routine doctors are recommending for women over 40.

Big + Easy + Safe: From a financial advisor: the one decision that quietly builds wealth faster than anything else, and you can start today.

When you see a hook that goes viral, run it through this BENS filter. You’ll start to notice that almost every high-performing hook is using at least one of these triggers, and the biggest hits are usually stacking two or three.

How to Use The BENS In Your Instagram Content This Week

Here’s your homework. Pull up the last three pieces of content you posted that did not perform the way you hoped. Run each hook through the BENS filter and ask yourself:

  • Is there anything Big in this hook? A significant implication, status shift, or transformation?
  • Is there anything Easy? A promise of less time, less effort, or less complexity?
  • Is there anything New? A recent development, just-dropped fact, or fresh idea?
  • Is there anything Safe? A credential, source, study, or trust signal?

If none of those triggers are present, rewrite the hook to include at least one. If you can include two, even better. The same content, with a stronger hook, often performs dramatically differently.

The strategy here isn’t about being louder or more clever. It’s about being more aligned with how human attention actually works. Once you start writing hooks with BENS in mind, you stop fighting against your audience’s brain and start working with it.
