After more than a decade in social media, one thing has become very clear:
The accounts that grow consistently aren’t creating more content—they’re repeating what already works.
That’s why I rely on a handful of proven Instagram Reels formulas instead of reinventing my strategy every week, because they’re simple and designed to keep people watching without requiring you to talk on camera.
So if you’re tired of overthinking your Reels or just don’t have the energy to write new hooks each week, here are my favorite hook formulas.
The “Text-First” Reel
HOW TO DO IT:
With this type of Reel, the text (or hook) is the star. Just like a Thread, use snappy text but bring it to life with simple b-roll video.
PRO TIP:
Make the text box centered and use black and white text so it’s easily readable.
HOOK TO USE: “I wish more people knew ____.”
The “Reveal” Reel
HOW TO DO IT:
Start with text that sets up what’s to come, then in the same or separate clip, share the reveal!
Great for services, before & afters, or creative work where results speak louder than words.
PRO TIP:
Reveal by the 3 second mark so they stick around longer.
HOOK TO USE: “Revealing my ____ until all the people who love ____ find my account.”
The “Experience” Reel
HOW TO DO IT:
Grab short video clips, pair with an audio (preferably trending), and add simple text that explains what we’re watching.
PRO TIP:
People love to feel like they’re there with you so let people feel the experience as if they’re in it.
HOOK TO USE: “POV: You ____ [ex: discover this ____ in downtown ____] and now ____ [ex: your weekends look like this”
The “Book” Reel
HOW TO DO IT:
I call this the “Book Reel” because it’s structured like a book (or carousel). You start with the title, then each clip opens a new page either telling the story or sharing tips one by one.
PRO TIP:
Keep your “pages” short & snappy (1–2 seconds each). The faster it feels, the more people will rewatch which boosts retention + reach.
HOOK TO USE: “My favorite quick and easy ____ for ____”

The “Demo” Reel
HOW TO DO IT:
Film one clip showing the tutorial OR separate short clips of the process. Include text for clarity so they know what they’re watching.
PRO TIP:
People love watching a process unfold, but sometimes it’s best to start with the outcome first, then rewind to show the process.
HOOK TO USE: “This is your sign to ____”
The “List” Reel
HOW TO DO IT:
Use simple B-roll and add a hook at the top and each line of text has one item on your list. Works best with 1 simple B-roll clip.
PRO TIP:
Don’t overwhelm with your list and be specific so it’s not “tips” they see every day…mix in your perspective.
HOOK TO USE: “Things I would never ____ [ex: have in my home] as a _____”
Here’s what I want you to remember:
Your Reels don’t need to be flashy to be effective. They need to feel human, intentional, and easy to consume.
These formulas work because they give people a reason to stop, stay, and come back for more—without asking you to overcomplicate your process.
Keep it simple. Keep it repeatable. And trust that consistency beats perfection every time.
